Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians

In 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant set aside land in an executive order allotting a checkerboard of even-numbered sections as the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. The first bathhouse in 1887 is pictured on the right.

Wonder Palms Ranch

Everett Knox DaVall purchases a half-section of land from Southern Pacific Railroad and plants 250 date palms, establishing Wonder Palms Ranch, the first residential property in what would become Rancho Mirage

Rio Del Sol Estates

R.P. “Bert” Davie and E.E. McIntyre begin buying 80-acre parcels to resell to friends and business peers. Davie built a road across the Whitewater River flood channel, which he dubbed Rio del Sol, to serve residents of what became known as Rio del Sol Estates

Eleven Mile Ranch

William Everett establishes Eleven Mile Ranch at the northeast end of Magnesia Falls Drive

Clancy Lane Neighborhood

Leslie and Helen Clancy build the first ranch at Rio del Sol Estates, now known as the Clancy Lane neighborhood

Rancho Mirage Name Appears

Louis McLaughlin “Mac” Blankenhorn, a Pasadena investor, purchases land around Magnesia Falls Cove and begins selling lots offering “modern attractive small homes.” Advertisements boast that “Rancho Mirage,” a name suggested by his wife, Ruth, offers “one more hour sunshine” than Palm Springs

Actor Frank Morgan (The Wizard of Oz) builds one of the original Rancho Mirage homes on Sahara Road

Magnesia Falls

Attorney A. Ronald Button and actor Dave Culver purchase almost 2,000 acres of the land around Magnesia Falls to seed the restart residential development. In 1956, he’s briefly joined in his venture TV and radio personality Art Linkletter

White Sun Estates & Thunderbird Ranch

Jack and Helen Dengler buy and convert Eleven Mile Ranch into White Sun Guest Ranch. It’s now a gated community of some 50 homes called White Sun Estates. Frank Bogert and corporate investors open the Thunderbird Ranch.

Thunderbird Ranch

Johnny Dawson chooses Thunderbird Ranch and Red Roof ranches as the location for an 18-hole golf course and country club, backed by investors including Bob Hope, Randolph Scott, Phil Harris, Desi Arnaz, and Ralph Kiner.

Thunderbird Country Club & Desert Air Hotel

Thunderbird Country Club opens with the desert’s first 18-hole golf course. Tire company exec Leonard Firestone is among the first buyers. Los Angeles architect Henry “Hank” Gogerty opens Desert Air Hotel with a landing strip, rental cottages, a pool, and a polo field on the site of today’s Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa

Tamarisk Country Club debuts the desert’s second 18-hole course, with reigning Masters and U.S. Open champion Ben Hogan as its head pro

Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra buys a William F. Cody-designed house on the 17th fairway of the Tamarisk Country Club golf course

Blue Skies Village, Ryder Cup, & Ford Motor Company

The 21.5-acre Blue Skies Village trailer park opens on New Year’s Day. Thunderbird hosts the 1955 Ryder Cup matches, pitting the United States against Great Britain. Ernest Breech, chairman of the Ford Motor Company, asks Thunderbird Country Club for permission to use its moniker.

Walter and Leonore Annenberg complete their Sunnlyands estate on 200 acres. Englishman Ron Fletcher launches the prime rib venue Lord Fletcher’s, modeled after his mother country’s humble inns and pubs and filled with medieval-esque swords, lances, tapestries

Mission Hills Country Club opens. Eisenhower Medical Center opens. Developer Bill Bone purchases a 135-acre date plantation adjacent to Thunderbird Country Club

Colgate Dinah Shore Golf Tournament

Singer/actress and talk show host Dinah Shore lends her name to the Colgate Dinah Shore Golf Tournament played at Mission Hills Country Club

Las Casuelas Nuevas, Incorporation, & First Mayor

Florencio Delgado opens Las Casuelas Nuevas. Voters approve incorporation and elect the first City Council in July. Rancho Mirage incorporated as a city on August 3, and City Council elects William Rawitzer Mayor.

Underground Utilities

City Council passes ordinance requiring underground installation of utilities

World Cup of Golf, Fire Station 50, & The Sinatras

Mission Hills hosts the World Cup of Golf on the club’s Tournament Course as well as the American Airlines Tennis Games. The City’s first fire station opens on land donated by Thunderbird Country Club. Frank and Barbara Sinatra exchange vows at Sunnylands

The Fords & Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa

Gerald and Betty Ford vacate the White House and build a home on the 13th fairway of Thunderbird Country Club. Cary Grant, Roy Rogers, and Bob Hope are among the star-studded list of attendees at the groundbreaking of Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa

Restaurant Row, Davis Cup Finals, & Mission Hills Resort

Wally’s Desert Turtle, Kobe Japanese Steak House, and Chart House Restaurant open. Mission Hills hosts the Davis Cup finals. Mission Hills Resort (now The Westin Rancho Mirage Golf Resort & Spa) opens

Construction of an 18,000-square-foot City Hall completed; it would be remodeled and expanded in 1996.

Rancho Mirage Elementary

Palm Springs Unified School District opened Rancho Mirage Elementary, the first public primary school in Rancho Mirage

Betty Ford Center

Thunderbird neighbors Betty Ford and Leonard Firestone found the Betty Ford Center at Eisenhower. It quickly gains renown as a leading drug and alcohol treatment and rehabilitation center

Barbara Sinatra Children's Center

The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, cofounded by philanthropist Helene Galen, opens at Eisenhower to serve victims of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse

The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage opens. Amy Alcott wins her second Nabisco Dinah Shore championship and gives women’s sports a signature moment by leaping into “Poppie’s Pond” at Mission Hills. President Reagan tees off at Sunnylands alongside Secretary of State George Schultz and World Golf Hall of Famers Tom Watson and Lee Trevino

Desert European Motorcars opens, offering luxury and performance brands including Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, Jaguar, Land Rover, McLaren, Lamborghini, and Rolls-Royce

The City erects a fence to safeguard the federally endangered Peninsular bighorn sheep

Ranchito Chiquita & Chart House

Ranchito Chiquita, Merrill Follansbee’s Rio del Sol Estates house, built from river rock in 1934 and thought to be the oldest home in Rancho Mirage, is relocated to Whitewater Park. The City designates the iconic, Kendrick Bangs Kellogg–designed Chart House Restaurant as a historic landmark. (It’s destroyed by a fire and demolished in 2012)
